System process locked file

If nothing else works, you may need to schedule an outage to reboot into safe mode and delete the file. You might prefer to solve the causes for such locks, by searching using Process Explorer for the locking process. Once you know which system process it is, you may be able to disable it. For example, an always good candidate is Microsoft Search. Rebooting is sometimes all you need to do; if you haven't tried that yet, do so. If it's still locked when the system comes back online, then you can use a schedule-delete-for-boot utility.

Hello Lucy, I once had your issue: if I remember correctly, the file I was trying to delete was inside a SMB share: all I did to fix that was to delete and re-create the Share. This can go on indefinitely, corrupting huge amounts of data. Though the above described scenario may not be very likely to occur, it is indeed a real possibility. Therefore, the best way to close a handle is either to a make the app that opened it close it or b shut down your PC.
